Bokor’s Deputy Governor arrested for domestic violence

Buth Reaksmey Kongkea   The Kampot Provincial Court yesterday arrested and charged Kim Panha, the Deputy Governor of Bokor City, for allegedly committing violence against his wife.   Kampot provincial police officer Major Yun Saroeun said yesterday that Panha, 33, was charged with “Violence Committed by Spouse or Partner” under Article 222 of the Criminal Code.    If convicted, he faces a jail term from two to five years.    Maj Saroeun said that Panha was arrested on Tuesday following a complaint from his wife Mat Leakena, 29, and on instructions from the Governor of Kampot Province Mao Thonin, following the guidelines from the provincial prosecutor.  According to the police’s investigation as well as the wife's testament, Panha and Leakena married in 2019 and have a daughter living in Kampot city, he said that. Ahmad Yaya and his nephew Ismael Pin Osman appeal sentence

Buth Reaksmey Kongkea Former parliamentarian Ahmad Yahya and his nephew Ismael Pin Osman who both received 15-year sentences for human trafficking had their case transferred to the Appeals Court yesterday as there was evidence not considered by the lower court. The evidence includes a list of the names of labourers recruited by Ahmad’s licenced company and sent to work overseas and charged under a law that didn’t exist at the time. Ahmad, 70, former President of the Accent Group and also a former Social Affairs Ministry secretary of state; and  Osman, 49, former official at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, were convicted of trafficking two women from Cambodia to work as housemaids in Saudi Arabia. Tycoon Chea Saron and Associates Charged and Detained for $ 40 Million Fraud

Buth Reaksmey Kongkea  The Kampot provincial court on April 27, 2023 charged and placed Tycoon Chea Saron and his eight associates in prison pending pre-trial in connection with allegedly cheating more than $40 million from more than 5,000 families through an investment scheme with Saron’s company, with the promise of higher monthly returns committed in 2018 and 2023.    Kampot provincial court’s Spokesman Mann Boreth said yesterday that the nine accused were  named as Oknha Chea Saron, the owner of Chea Saron Realty Co, Ltd and his associates, Eam Samrorb,  Yeth Vanna, Rom Vichheka; Chea Sary, Chea Sarith,  Vorn Kean, Luch Reap, and Pheang Hour.    They were all charged with “Fraud with Aggravating Circumstances” under Articles 377 and 380 of the Criminal Code, Boreth added.   If convicted, they face a jail term between two and five years each.   Major General Mao Chanmathurith, the Chief of Kampot Provincial Police, said they were arrested on April 22, 2022 by Kampot provinci

Police arrest suspect in women’s beheading case

Buth Reaksmey Kongkea The suspect accused of beheading a female casino card dealer was arrested at a guesthouse on the Cambodian-Thai border and sent to Phnom Penh for treatment as the man had attempted to commit suicide, police said. Lieutenant Colonel Keo Saroeun said yesterday that the suspect is Lor Kong Hour, 41, and the victim is Morn Sreymey, 24, a trainee card dealer working with the Dynasty Casino & Hotel and from Bavit Kandal village, Banteay Dek commune in Kandal province’s Kean Svay district. They were lovers. “According to Lor’s confession, he killed the victim because he was jealous and angry with Morn for having an affair with another young man,” Lt. Col. Saroeun said. “He was also angry with the victim’s parents for forcing the two to stop having the affair. But he loved her so much and could not live without her.     Buth Reaksmey Kongkea  Police are searching for an unknown suspect who brutally murdered a woman in Svay Rieng province.   The victim was a female who worked as a trainee dealer at a casino in Bavit city. The murderer slashed her throat and then beheaded her.   The heinous crime took place at about 1 am yesterday in a rental room at Bavit Kandal village in Svay Rieng province. Bavit city police spokesman, Major Keo Vuthy, named the victim as Morn Srey Mey, 24.   She was identified as a trainee dealer working with the Dynasty Casino & Hotel at Banteay Dek commune, in Bavit Kandal village of Kandal province. Maj Vuthy noted that at 1:30 am yesterday the body of a woman was found by the home owner, dead in her room at Bavit Kandal village.   He said that the house owner immediately alerted police.   Police identified the victim and concluded she was brutally attacked and murdered. The woman’s body was without clothing.   He added that the victim’s head was severe

Court hears appeal of duo jailed for life over murder of elderly

Buth Reaksmey Kongkea   The Phnom Penh Appeal Court yesterday heard the appeal of a man and woman sentenced to life term for murdering an elderly woman in a case that dated back to 2015. Presiding Judge Ky Rithy named the male accused as 28-year-old Loeuk Chanveasn alias Clo; and Sun Vary alias Vin, female, 47, both residents Kbal Damrey commune in Kratie province. The victim was named as Phin Pheap, 61, a widow and farmer living in Changhob village of Kbal Damrey commune in Kratie province. She was also the godmother of accused Vary. About four months before the murder, Vary had borrowed $3,000 from the victim but did not repay the money on time.   When the victim started visiting Vary demanding the money Vary then decided to eliminate the elderly with the help of accused Chanveasna, a former convict. 5 Chinese men jailed for kidnap, extortion of fellow citizen

  Buth Reaksmey Kongkea   The Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday charged and sent five Chinese men to prison for allegedly kidnapping and extorting $1 million from a fellow citizen, a businessman, for his release. The five accused were named as Chinese tourists Xu Pan Pan (38), Tien Heng Wei (39), Miao Qian Long (41), Zhu Xinyu (39), and 51-year-old Bai Fun Jun.  All the five, who were arrested last Thursday, were charged with arrest, detention and unlawful confinement and unauthorised holding of weapon under Articles 253 and 490 of Cambodian Criminal Code. Two suspects were shot dead during the gun fight in Phnom Penh, said the Phnom Penh municipal police department.    Municipal police spokesman Brigadier General San Sokseiha said that around 10:45 am yesterday police in Porsen Chey district cooperated with city police to surround and apprehend four suspected thieves, who were thought to be behind a series of vehicle thefts. The gang was caught while attempting to steal a vehicle parked in front of an automotive service garage in Chom Chao I commune’s Kork Chambok village.   Buth Reaksmey Kongkea  The former Parliamentarian Ahmad Yahya and his nephew yesterday asked the Supreme Court to overturn the ruling of the lower courts, who sentenced them to 15 years and to release them. The accused, Ahmad Yahya, 70, the former President of the Accent Group and also the former Social Affairs Ministry secretary of state and his nephew Ismael Pin Osman, 49, a former official, who worked at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, were convicted of trafficking two Cham women from Cambodia to work as housemaids in Saudi Arabia between 2004 and 2017.  Presiding Judge Kong Srim said that in this case, the accused Yahya and Osman were sentenced on August 13, 2019 by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to 15 years each in prison.  The court also ordered both of them to jointly pay 200 million Riels (about $50,000) each to the women.
