The Phnom Penh Appeal Court yesterday
heard the appeal of a man and woman sentenced to life term for murdering an
elderly woman in a case that dated back to 2015.
Presiding Judge Ky Rithy named the male accused as 28-year-old Loeuk Chanveasn alias Clo; and Sun Vary alias Vin, female, 47, both residents Kbal Damrey commune in Kratie province.
The victim was named as Phin Pheap, 61, a widow and farmer living in Changhob village of Kbal Damrey commune in Kratie province.
She was also the godmother of accused Vary.
About four months before the murder, Vary had borrowed $3,000 from the victim but did not repay the money on time.
When the victim started visiting Vary demanding the money Vary then decided to eliminate the elderly with the help of accused Chanveasna, a former convict.
She paid the assassin $500 to kill the victim while she was sleeping alone at her house on November 1 midnight.
After murdering the elderly woman, though Chanveasna managed to flee he was later arrested the very next day in the village. Based on his confession, the police later arrested Vary at her home.
The Kratie Provincial Court on June 13, 2016 sentenced both of them to life-term sentence and also ordered to pay about $ 5, 000 each to the victim's family.
The duo who was charged with premeditated murder appealed it to the Phnom Penh Appeal Court.
During her appeal yesterday, Vary admitted
to committing the offence, but said she hired the man to kill the old woman
because she shreatened to sue her over the loan amount.
She appealed the judgement of the Kratie provincial court citing it was a big punishment for a first-time offender like her.
A verdict is due on April 27.
