The court sentences Pich Sreymom to two years accused of allegedly issuing dud cheques

Buth Reaksmey Kongkea The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on December 23, 2022 sentenced a real estate businesswoman to two years in prison accused of allegedly issuing dud cheques to settle more than $3 million in debts to five of her clients.   Judge Rath Sitha named the accused as Pichr Sreymom, 35, an entrepreneur and the owner of real estate company living in Chbar Ampov district’s Nirot commune. He said, Sreymom was charged with five counts of “ issuing dud cheques” under Article 231 of the Law on Negotiable Instrument and Payment Transactions.  He added that Sreymom was arrested on November 17 in accordance with a warrant issued by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court.   

3 Cambodians among 10 booked for drug trafficking in Sihanoukville

  Buth Reaksmey Kongkea   Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court detained and charged yesterday six Chinese nationals, a Taiwanese, and three Cambodians in connection with possession and trafficking of 1,000 kilogrammes of meth in Sihanoukville. According to the court’s document yesterday obtained by the Khmer Times, the six Chinese men were identified as  Zhou Jing Bin, 43; Cai Jian Fong, 29; Ye Lichi, 33; Li Peng Fei, 24; and Liu Yang, 30.   The Taiwanese national was identified as Zhao Bin Fei, 29; and the three Cambodian men were identified as Prim Reach, 31; Chan Ratana, 30; and Pothi Panha, 31. All of them were charged with drug possession, trafficking and production under Articles 27, 39 and 40 of Cambodian Law on Drug Control and with money laundering under Articles 27 and 38 of Cambodian Law on Anti-Money Laundering and Financing. Prosecutors ask judge to revoke Kem Sokha's political rights, re-arrest and place him in prison

Sam Rainsy, 36 ex-CNRP officials jailed to 6 years in absentia

    Buth Reaksmey Kongkea Phnom Penh Municipal Court on December 22, 2022 sentenced Sam Rainsy, former leader of court-dissolved CNRP, and other 36 ex-CNRP officials in absentia for conspiring to overthrow the government with the planned return of the party’s vice-president Mua Sochua from the US in 2021.   The municipal court pronounced five to six years in jail for each one of them while dropping charges against one accused after he was found not involved with the conspiracy plot.   Presiding Judge Ouk Reth Kunthear said that 11 of the total 37 accused - Sam Rainsy (71), his wife Tioulong Saumura (70), Eng Chhay Eang (55); Long Ry (50); Mua Sochua (68); Ou Chanrath (51); Ou Chanrith (51); Ho Vann (73); Heng Daro (48); Men Sothavrin (61); and Van Narith (56) were sentenced to six   years each in prison and barred from active politics, including voting, for seven years.      Rest of the accused were sentenced by the court to five years each in prison.   “The Phnom Penh Munici

  Tep Nayak In a hilarious remark made against Sam Rainsy, the self-exiled former leader of court-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), Prime Minister Hun Sen said yesterday that “Rainsy sold his house to settle defamation penalties, but he still owes me $300,000”. Speaking at an inauguration ceremony of the road connecting Prey Nup district to Sihanoukville on December 22, 2022 , the Prime Minister revealed that the house of Rainsy, which was also headquarters of CNRP in Chak Angre Krom commune, Meanchey district, Phnom Penh, had been sold for $1,652,000. Ex-teachers stand trial for selling ice to undercover agents

Buth Reaksmey Kongkea   Four former teachers, comprising two Nigerians, one American and a native, stood trial yesterday at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court in connection with selling more than two kilogrammes of ice to undercover police officers in 2021.   Presiding Judge Kim Sokunthea named the four accused as English teachers Chineme Nwoko Precious (41) and David Vincent, 48 (Nigerians); Matthew David Sample, 40 (American); and Theam Tola, 36 Cambodian national, and Chinese and English language interpreter.   Judge Sokunthea said that they all were charged with “drug possession, transport and trafficking” under Article 40 of Cambodian Law on Drugs Control.   If convicted, they each face a jail term of 20 years or a life sentence.   Judge Sokunthea said Thean Tola was arrested by the anti-drug department police at the Ministry of Interior while trying to sell the drug to an undercover police officer who posed as a drug dealer near Chroy Changvar bridge on the National Road 6

Teacher arrested for showing, distributing porn clips among students

Buth Reaksmey Kongkea   The Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday charged a high school teacher with child pornography for showing pornographic videos to female students in a classroom during breaktime.   He also forwarded some clips to the male students in the classroom who distributed it among other students, which came to the notice of parents who lodged a complaint against the teacher.   The accused identified as Huoth Huy, 32, a high school teacher living in Koh Kong province’s Botum Sakor district, Andoung commune, was arrested on Friday and has been sent to prison pending the pre-trial.   Huy was charged with “child pornography” under Article 41 of the Law on Suppression of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation, and if he is convicted, he will face a jail term of up to five years.   Ministry of Interior’s Anti-cybercrime office police deputy chief Lieutenant Colonel Meng Sothearoath told Khmer Times on Sunday that Huy was a teacher working with the Botum Sakor High

Education dep’t chief faces probe over $75,000 salary scam

  Buth Reaksmey Kongkea A six-member team of Ministry of Interior have started a probe into scam allegations raised by teachers against education department director in Tboung Khmum province.   In Povsambath, the provincial education, youth and sports department chief, has allegedly swindled nearly $75,000 by forging documents of 113 contract teachers between 2021 and 2022.   Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports Spokesperson Ros Soveacha said yesterday that the investigation was launched after the teachers protested and lodged a complaint against the official.   In their complaint submitted to Hang Chuon Narun, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, the teachers alleged that Povsambath swindled the money by producing fake expenditures and slashing their salaries.   Soveacha added that the Ministry will investigate the case thoroughly before taking an action against the allegations.   “The working group of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports is still conducting
