5 Chinese men jailed for kidnap, extortion of fellow citizen

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday charged and sent five Chinese men to prison for allegedly kidnapping and extorting $1 million from a fellow citizen, a businessman, for his release.
The five accused were named as Chinese tourists Xu Pan Pan (38), Tien Heng Wei (39), Miao Qian Long (41), Zhu Xinyu (39), and 51-year-old Bai Fun Jun.
All the five, who were arrested last Thursday, were charged with arrest, detention and unlawful confinement and unauthorised holding of weapon under Articles 253 and 490 of Cambodian Criminal Code.
Disclosing the details, Penal Police Officer Lieutenant Colonel Sao Saroeun said yesterday that the gang of five at about 1:30 am on April 12 kidnapped the businessman while he was getting off from his car at the parking lot of his apartment in 7 Makara district’s Veal Vong district.
The accused brought him to their rental apartment on the outskirts of the city, in Dangkor district.
“After unlawfully confining him, they used the victim’s phone to contact his wife living in Phnom Penh and demanded $1 million as ransom,” Lt. Col. Saroeun said.
“They also threatened to kill the victim if their demand is not met or if they would alert police,” he added.
The victim’s family alerted police and
cooperated with them to rescue the businessman.
The police also seized two cars, two
pistols, one AK-47 rifle, one grenade and other material from them.
