Government Plans to Build High Schools in Communities

The Royal Government of Cambodia has plans to increase the number of high schools and junior high schools in all communes, districts, cities and provinces by 2011 in order to promote education for all the nation’s children.
The Premier said the government will also build more accommodation centers for teachers and students. This will help even the gender balance between male and female students. It will also help teachers remain near their students and reduce traveling time for instructors.
IN addition, the government will rehabilitate and construct more roads, bridges, electricity and other infrastructures for rural areas, districts and prioritized cities and provinces, said Hun Sen.
“The Royal Government has a clear vision and a strategic plan to promote and strengthen the education sector in Cambodia. Currently, as a result of sustained peace, security, political stability and progress in Cambodia, the government’s priority is to build schools,” he told pedagogical students during a graduation ceremony at the National Institute of Education on April 29.
To achieve this objective, Cambodia will increase the funds earmarked for education in the national budget. This will be channeled to Ministry of Education Youth and Sport. It will be used in part to increase salaries for teachers in future, said Hun Sen, adding that all provincial authorities have to build teacher and student accommodation centers in their own provinces to attract the good teachers from Phnom Penh to teach students in their communities and provinces.
“We will be able to achieve our main goals in providing education for all people, promoting and developing the education sector in Cambodia.” Hun Sen said. “We also expect that we will be able to complete the project by 2011.”
Im Sethy, Minister at the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport, said in the age of globalization and economic knowledge, the education sector plays a vital role in providing a pool of intelligent and morally well-adjusted human resources for the nation’s development.
The Royal Government of Cambodia, under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Sen has determined that education is a priority for developing human resources with competitive capacities to serve the needs of economic development and society, said Im Sethy.
The Minister continued to say that to promote education, the government has implemented the rectangular strategy and a range of other strategic plans for the period covering 2006-2010, to ensure equal access to education for all. The action plan’s results should include guaranteed student enrollment, a renewed emphasis on educational quality, and better trained, happier teachers and students, according to Im Sethy
He emphasized that for the 2007-2008 academic year, 4,861 pedagogy students completed their studies at the National Institute of Education in Phnom Penh and other pedagogical centers across the region. They were sent to work as teachers at primary and junior high schools in rural areas and provinces across the country.
In addition, 488 higher education teachers, including 130 female teachers graduated from the National Institute of Education in 2008, according to a report released by the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport.
Im Koch, Director of the National Institute of Education in the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport, said that according to Ministry statistics, in 2009, there would be 3,403, 751 students and 106,300 teachers in Cambodia. He added that there are 1,634 public kindergartens, 6,476 public primary schools, 1,006 public junior high schools, and 315 secondary schools. ////
