In a remote area of a village in the Ang Snoul district of Kandal province, a five-month pregnant woman was killed by having her throat slashed and burned alive.

Police are now hunting for the suspects.

Veng Thavry, a 26-year-old former garment factory worker who resides in Rumlech village, Tuol Pich commune, Kandal province, was identified as the victim by Major Nuon Chamroeun, the Deputy Chief of Tuol Pich commune police.

According to Maj Chamroeun, the victim's husband claimed that on January 16, the victim received a call from a suspected debtor who wanted to meet with her in the village to collect the debt.

He said that the victim's spouse had driven her to an arranged location in Rumlech village on his motorcycle.

He claimed that after they got to the appointment location, the wife told the husband to drop her off there and he was told to wait for her in a local coffee shop.

The husband then drove his motorbike to the coffee shop and waited for her.

Maj Chamroeun claimed that after waiting a while the husband called his wife and was told to go home first.

He added that the husband returned home.

“The victim however did not return home,” Maj Chamroeun said.

“Her husband asked for intervention,” he said.

On January 21, a villager who discovered the victim's charred body in a peaceful forest region near Rumlech village called the police.

He claimed that upon receiving the report, the victim's relatives and the police visited the scene to examine the body and ascertained that it belonged to Veng Thavry, who had been missing for six days.

"The victim’s throat was slashed according to the inspection of her body."

"We believe the suspects moved her to a quiet place after killing her and burned her to destroy the evidence."

The chief of the Ang Snuol district police, Colonel Mean Samnang, ssaid the case was determined to be premeditated murder.  Police are, however, still unsure of the motive.

He added that police have yet to identify the suspects.
