Former President of the Khmer Rise Party William Guang and four colleagues were sentenced  on January 29, 2024  by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court from four to six years each for a botched armed robbery in Kampong Speu province’s Kong Pisei district in 2021.

This is the second case of armed robbery by Guang and his gang. In the first case, the group was sentenced in 2022 by the municipal court from six to nine years each for robbing online vendor An Siev Mey in Phnom Penh earlier in 2022. The sentences will be served consecutively.

In yesterday’s court case, the five accused were Sok Sovann Vathana Sabung alias William Guang, 44, the former President of Khmer Rise Party (KRP); Or Ramorn, 33, the former driver of William Guang; Sovann Ranuth, 26, the former personal assistant of Guang; and Keth March, 26, former account of the KRP.

Presiding Judge Chhun Davy stated that the accused William Guang was sentenced by the court to six years while Ramorn and Ranuth sentenced to five years each and March was convicted by the court to four years.

On the night of November 5, 2021, the accused posing as police officers and armed with an AK-47 assault rifle and two handguns stopped the car of property business woman Morn Dany on National Road No. 3 in Kampong Speu province’s Kong Pisey district to rob her.

But their plan failed, as the only person in the car was the driver, who fled the botched hold up and later alerted Dany who reported the incident to local police. The victim also filed a lawsuit with the Military Police for intervention.

Dany and her driver later identified the suspects after William Guang and his colleagues were arrested on December 20, 2022 after they robbed tycoon online vendor An Siev Mey in Phnom Penh.

During yesterday’s trial, the accused denied the allegations, claiming they didn’t commit the 2021 robbery.

Guang and his wife Sovann Srey Soryopor, 24; Or Ramorn, Neth Thai Mony, Sovann Ranuth, Chuon   Sopheaktra, Keth March, and Thun Wathanak Boramey, 27, were sentenced on August 2, 2022 by the Municipal Court from six to nine years in prison each in connection with the An Siev Mey robbery committed in Por Senchey district.
