Manhunt on for suspects in activist assault

Phnom Penh police are searching for four youths who assaulted activist Ny Nak while he and his wife were riding in a motorcycle along a road in Chbar Ampov district on Tuesday afternoon.

The attack caused very serious injuries to Nak who is undergoing treatment at a private clinic for treatment in Chamkar Mon district.

Describing the incident, the victim’s wife Sok Sineth, an agricultural expert, said yesterday that at around 1.30 pm on Tuesday the group of four kicked their motorcycle causing Nak to fall down from the motorcycle and then they jointly beat him up before fleeing the scene.


“They took off my husband’s helmet and attacked on his head in order to kill him,” Sineth said, adding that her husband got serious injuries on head, lips, wrists and legs.

Sineth appealed to the authorities to find the miscreants and bring them before law.

Brigadier General Bun Satya, the Deputy Chief of Phnom Penh Municipal Police in charge of chief of crimes investigation department, told Khmer Times yesterday according to initial assessment it was an attempt of robbery case and not politically motivated.

Bri. Gen. Satya added that the suspects attacked Nak in order to rob of his motorbike. As they failed to get the bike, they fled.


“The police now are working hard on this case in order to arrest them and bring all of them to justice,” Bri. Gen. Satya told Khmer Times.

The 43-year-old activist had been sentenced on August 18, 2021 by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to 18 months in prison and a fine of $500 for allegedly   inciting people against the government through Facebook posts. He was charged with two accounts of “public insult and incitement to commit a felony” under Articles 307, 494 and 495 of the Criminal Code.

Sued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, he was arrested on December 12, 2020 and released on June 10 last year
