Prime Minister Hun Sen received the honorary title of “Puthamumakapibal”

Cambodia’s Minister
Samdech Tekchor Hun Sen on April 2, 2023 received the honorary title of “Puthamumakapibal”
Prime (Patron of Buddhism) from the World Buddhist Organization.
Prime Minister Hun Sen also
accepted an “Honorary Doctorate in Humanities and Solidarity” from the National
University of Niger Padang, Indonesia, at an event in Phnom Penh.
The prime minister spoke
about the fact that Cambodian people uphold the values and virtues of Buddhism.
He noted that citizens continue to enjoy religious freedom enshrined in the
Cambodian Constitution.
He encouraged the development of fresh thinking and new ideas by linking Buddhist civilisation around the world to promote the dissemination of the Buddha's teachings so that educational institutions, think-tanks, Buddhist institutes and universities can integrate its positive values into educational and research programmes.
Prime Minister Hun Sen
expressed his gratitude, saying that the award of a doctorate degree and
special title is a great honour for him and the Cambodian people.
He emphasized the
invaluable relationship between Buddhism, development and peaceful coexistence and
harmony between peoples.
He said that Buddha's
teachings have penetrated into human life, both social, cultural, political and
economy in Cambodia.
He stressed that the
nation officially adopted Buddhism as the state religion in the 1993 Constitution,
which represents the true spirit and philosophy of all Cambodians.
“Buddhism is the basis
for peace building, national reunification, post-conflict reconstruction, as
well as our constructive dialogues,” the prime minister said.
“The teachings of
Buddha show us the basic philosophy of certainty and realism, which are values
that adhere to principles of non-violence, tolerance, care, respect, love and
compassion,” he said.
The prime minister said that as to Buddhism,
the state religion, everyone must remember that the harmonisation of ethnic
background and religion is thriving in Cambodia, especially as evidenced by the
peaceful coexistence of Islam and Christianity.
The president of the World
Buddhist Organization, Phalop Thay Ari, explained that the award was conferred
on Hun Sen because of the role he played to restore the monarchy successfully to
Cambodia as well as for revitalising Buddhism.
He added that Hun Sen
dedicated his entire life to liberating the Cambodian people from the Khmer
Rouge regime. He devoted his life to rebuilding a peaceful society, uniting the
nation and bringing rapid development which has as made Cambodia famous on the
international stage.
At the same time as the prime minister Hun Sen received his honorary doctorate, Hun Manet, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, the eldest son of the prime minister, was honoured with the title of Senior Adviser by the World Buddhist Organization. //END//
