Police are searching for a former military police officer who is also a timber merchant. He is accused of shooting and injuring a woman following an altercation with her, allegedly after she refused his affections.

The attempted murder took place at 1 am on April 24 at a shop belonging to the victim located in Sen Monorom city, Mondulkiri province.

Mondulkiri provincial police Chief Major General Lor Sokha named the accused as Ros Puthea, alias ‘Krabei’ (Buffalo), 40. The former military officer lived in Spean Meanchey district of Sen Monorom city.

Maj Gen Sokha named the victim as Chorn Sovanneth also known as Za, 25. She is a hairdresser and lotion vendor living in the same village as the suspect.

He said that at about 1 am after midnight on April 24 the suspect entered the victim’s house while she was sleeping alone.

After entering, the suspect fired a shot at the victim’s right breast, causing serious injuries. He fled at midnight.

He said that the victim was rescued by her parents and taken to the provincial referral hospital for treatment.

He added that the victim remained at the hospital undergoing treatment.

“The suspect has not been arrested yet. Although not yet arrested, the investigating judge has already charged him in absentia with attempted premeditated murder and with unauthorized possession of a weapon. The judge issued an order for his arrest,” Maj Gen Sokha said.

“Our police are working hard and cooperating with neighbouring police forces to search for him,” he said.

The parents of the victim stated that the suspect shot the victim because he was angry with her for denying his love.

They added that the suspect had loved the victim for years, and had courted the victim. However, her parents said she refused him because he was a gangster and she did not like him.
