Police arrested 4 men for misleading 112 labourers and taking $110,000 from them, under the guise of employment in South Korea
Police in the municipal anti-human trafficking and
juvenile protection department in cooperation with police in Porsenchey
district, on March 8, 2023 arrested 4 men for misleading 112 labourers and
taking $110,000 from them, under the guise of employment in South Korea.
Major Mom Sarim, the municipal anti-human trafficking
and juvenile protection police officer, said that the four suspects were
arrested at a guesthouse in Por Senchey district’s Kakab I commune.
Maj Sarim said that according to the police’s
investigations and the victims’ complaints, in January this year, the four
suspects, who claimed that they were the representatives of a
Korean-based-recruitment agency, who advertised job opportunities in South Korea
across the county.
According to their advertisement, those recruited would receive
a salary of $1,500 per month, however, they had to pay $1,000 upfront for
arranging travel documents and Korean language lessons, he said.
He noted that between January and February, they
recruited a total of 112 labourers and each of them paid $1,000 to them and
were scheduled to depart on Tuesday this week.
In the early part of this week the victims travelled to
Phnom Penh in order to prepare before departing to South Korea, he added.
“But when the victim arrived in Phnom Penh and met with
the four suspects, they were told that their trip had been postponed as there
was no direct flight. They told the victims to return back to their home
and wait for the new date of departure,” he told the Khmer Times.
“The victims were angry with them and became suspicious.
They confronted them at the guesthouse where they stayed on Tuesday’s evening,”
he said.
“The victims asked for their money back, but the
suspects did not refund them,” he added.
He noted that the four suspects were later arrested on
Wednesday in accordance with the victims’ complaint.
He said that the four suspects are accused with
“Unlawful Removal for Cross-Border Transfer” under Article 11 of the Law on
Suppression of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation.
If convicted, they face a jail term from 7 to 15 years
each.
They have been detained at the municipal police
headquarter for further investigation and will be sent to the court for
questioning on Thursday this week, he added.
However, Maj Sarim did not reveal their identities
because police are still working on the case.
