The Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday
sentenced a construction worker to 30 years in prison for stabbing his
partner’s former husband to death for reuniting with her.
Presiding Judge Thvam Bunna named the accused as 30-year-old Nem Samart, a construction worker living in Preak Leap commune; and the victim as In Sokthy, 29, another construction worker living in the same commune.
“The court also orders him to pay about $10,000 in compensation to the victim’s family,” he said.
The court sentenced the accused on charges of premeditated murder under Article 200 of the Criminal Code.
Samarth said that when he met the Sokhom, a garment worker, in 2018 she was a divorcee with a toddler son from her first marriage with the victim.
Two months before the murder, the woman asked for separation from the drug addict and abusive accused, who had been jailed once, saying that she wished go back to her former husband (victim) because they both had a son together.
He added that on the day of murder, the victim and his partner invited him for a meeting at the victim’s house to negotiate their problematic relationship.
“I got so angry I went to meet them hiding
a vegetable knife in my trouser pocket. Our meeting ended in a fight and to
defend myself I stabbed him many times on his stomach and chest and then fled
in my motorcycle to Battambang province,” he added.
