Phnom Penh Municipal Police’s Spokesman Brigadier General San Sokseiha said that two former opposition activists were arrested on the evening of March 21, 2023 after posting provocative messages on social media related to the image of His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni.

Bri.Gen. Sokseiha named the two suspects as Yim Sinan and Hun Kosal.

They both are former activists of the dissolved-Cambodian National Rescued Party ( CNRP).

He said that both were allegedly accused with “Insulting the King and inciting to commit felony”  under articles 437, 494 and 495 of criminal codes.

They had posted on social media, using an image of His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni and posting provocative messages like “According to the voices of the people…today we can clearly see who is the real king of the earth.”

Eagle eyed social media monitors picked up on the posts and the 2 were quickly detained by authorities.

Commenting on the men’s action via social media, Prime Minister Hun Sen stated “If there is no guilt, it is strange, because this is not a way of expressing opinions, but a deliberate distortion of the truth.

However, we leave it to the court to decide.”

The two suspects could not be contacted for comments.  //END//
