Supreme Court Hear Appeal in Trafficked Woman Case

  \ Buth Reaksmey Kongkea The Supreme Court yesterday heard the appeal of a former Cambodian female garment worker jailed for 16 years for allegedly smuggling and selling seven Cambodian women to work as masseuses and sexual commercial workers in Malaysia.   Presiding Judge You Otttara named the accused as Oum Radin, 35, from Phnom Penh’s Russei Keo district. Judge Ottara stated that in 2016, Radin recruited seven Cambodian women and sent them from Phnom Penh to Malaysia via a Malaysian owned-labour recruitment agency based in Kuala Lumpur to work as housemaids there.   He said that when the victim arrived in Kuala Lumpur, they were later sold to work as masseuses and sexual commercial workers in karaoke shops there.   “The victims were sold by the Malaysian nationals who are the owners of karaoke shops from one place to one place as slaves and were forced to work there without payment for more than a year,” he said.   Judge Ottara said that the vict...

Village chief loses job for joining land rights protest

  Buth Reaksmey Kongkea   Penh Bronh, 45, chief of Sna Sangkream village, was allegedly fired from his position on Wednesday for participating in protest along with his villagers who demanded their land rights in Run Ta Ek development area.   Bronh, who was elected as village chief in 2019, claimed yesterday that he did not see any other reason for his job loss other than joining the protest attended by more than 200 families in the village. Seven Bank Officers Jailed over $ 8 Million Embezzlement

Buth Reaksmey Kongkea   The Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday sentenced four female and three male senior officers to two years and six months in prison each for allegedly embezzling a total of $8 million from Canadia Bank PLC between 2016 and 2019.     Presiding Judge Hok Pov named the women as Teang Wathanaknearyroth, 31; Sum  Sovannachakrya, 30; Sath Rachna, 30;   and Nuth Panhsocheata, 31; He identified the men as Thong Sotheay, 31; Chan Simontha, 39; and Soum Heang, 43.   “The Phnom Penh Municipal Court has decided to sentence seven of them to two years and six months in prison each,” Judge Pov read the verdict yesterday. “The Phnom Penh Municipal Court orders them to jointly pay $8 million for damages and another 30 million Riels (about $7,500) each in compensation to Van Chhar, the representative of the Canadia Bank PLC as plaintiff in the case,” he said.   Judge Pov said that they were charged with “Breach of Specia...

Cambodia to Boost Rice Exports to the Philippines

PHNOM PENH: Cambodia and the Philippines on November 11, 2022 agreed to boost bilateral cooperation on rice exports. The agreement was made during a bilateral meeting between Filipino President, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., and Prime Minister Hun Sen on Thursday, 10 November 2022, at the Sokha Hotel, Phnom Penh. In addition to agreement in boosting the rice exports, the two parties also agreed to boost bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, tourism, agriculture, information technology, logistics, and national security. The Cambodian government official said that during the meeting between Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen and the Filipino President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the Philippines would make a 100 percent investment in the rice mills, dryer machines and warehouses for rice processing, in order to export rice from Cambodia to the Philippines. EX-CNRP Commune Chief Ms. Kem Tola Jailed over Incitement

  Buth Reaksmey Kongkea   Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday jailed a former commune chief of the court-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) after she was arrested while trying to flee the country on Sunday.   She had been at large when the court on August 10 had sentenced her in absentia to 18 months in jail for incitement committed over Facebook between 2018 and 2021.   Anti-Terrorism and Transnational Crime Police Officer Lieutenant Colonel Long Bunsong yesterday identified her as Kem Tola, 36, a former chief of Treng Rayoeng commune in Kampong Speu province’s Phnom Srouch district. Lt Col. Bunsong said that the accused was arrested in accordance with the court’s arrest warrant.   “She was arrested on Sunday afternoon while she attempted to flee to Germany by taking a flight at the Phnom Penh International Airport,” he said. Authorities reach out to Interpol to bring Sam Rainsy before law

    Buth Reaksmey Kongkea   The Ministry of Justice yesterday gave green signal to contact Interpol and bring Sam Rainsy, former president of court-dissolved Cambodian National Rescued Party (CNRP), before justice for insulting King Norodom Sihamoni.   Chin Malin, Secretary of State and Spokesman at the Ministry of Justice, said yesterday that the Ministry, in accordance with law, has authorised authorities concerned to act against Sam Rainsy’s activities.   The Ministry yesterday urged the court and the Ministry of Interior to do whatever they can, including working with the Interpol, to punish Sam Rainsy over his short video in which he alleged “King Sihamoni is betraying the people of Cambodia and he has no national conscience like Prime Minister Hun Sen”.   Malin said that Rainsy’s accusation is damaging and he did not deserve a pardon. “In order to defend the name, honor, reputation and dignity of His Majesty the King, the Ministry of Justice...
