Four men and women handed 30-year sentence for drug trafficking Buth Reaksmey Kongkea The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on October 12, 2022 sentenced three men and a woman to 30 years in prison each for possessing and trafficking nearly 3 kilograms of ice in Chroy Changvar district last year. The court dropped charges against two other accused and ordered for his release because they did not find the guilty as accused. Presiding Judge Yinh Chheanavy named the six accused as Meng Sopheaktra also known as Baraing, male, 42; Chorn Sochan, male, 26; Te Lipheng Ang, male, 25; Tong Tharith, male, 42; Chan Phearum, male, 27; and Nguon Palinka, female, 39. She said that among them, the accused Meng Sopheaktra, Chorn Sochan, Te Lipheng Ang, and Nguon Palinka were sentenced by the court to 30 years in prison each and a fine 60 million Riels ( $ 15,000) each. “The Phnom Penh Municipal Court has decided to drop the charges against the accused Tong Tharith and Chan Phearum because they did not have guilt,” he said. She emphasized that they were charged with “drug possession and trafficking” under Article 40 of the Cambodian Law on Drugs Control. He said that they were arrested on October 19 last year in Phnom Penh’s Chroy Changvar district, Preak Leap commune. He added that police arrested a total of 2, 847. 01 grams (nearly 3 kilograms) of ices from them. // END//

Sorn Elit, the Tallest Cambodian Taekwando Champion

He was speaking to The Southeast Asia Weekly on July 22. The Secretary General said that Sorn Elit, 22, is currently the best Taekwondo fighter in Cambodia. He has attended many competitions both at home and abroad and has achieved success in both fields. In 2008, he won the national heavyweight title in the Taekwondo championships. “I am very proud of Sorn Elit as he is the best fighter in Cambodia,” Samnang said. “I believe that he will continue to bring honor to the country, the sport and himself as he competes in still more competitions at home and in the international fighting arena. Chan Tra: Life of a Cambodian Traditional Tattoo Artist

His modern counterparts are limited in their repertoire in comparison. His subjects include the human form, birds and abstract patterns. Chan Tra is now an expert in drawing Ankor Wat on the skin of foreign clients, thus turning them into walking, talking promotional materials for Cambodia’s tourist sector. Chan Tra was born in 1963 in Sihanouk province and has two sons and one daughter. He is an orphaned and a Survivor of the Khmer Rouge regime.
