Military police yesterday afternoon sent eight Chinese men to Phnom Penh Municipal Court for questioning after they were arrested last weekend for allegedly kidnapping a Vietnamese businesswoman and extorting $1million from her family in exchange for her release.
Phnom Penh Military Police Officer Major Long Kimheng said yesterday that the eight suspects are members of a Chinese gang living in Phnom Penh.
Maj. Kimheng identified the victim as 34-year-old Vietnamese businesswoman Nguven Thi Ming Ngang, However, he did not release the names of eight Chinese suspects.
Maj. Kimheng said that suspects were arrested at about 12.30 am on Saturday midnight after the military police forces raided a condo where they were staying in Phnom Penh.
“They
were arrested with evidence and the military police had rescued the victim from
them. The police also seized a big package of crystal methamphetamine and 36
other pills of ice as well as other related materials from them,” he said.
“The victim had already been handed over to her family via the Vietnamese embassy representative based in Phnom Penh,” he added.
He said that the victim’s family lodged a complaint with Phnom Penh Municipal Military Police and gave the necessary information to find out the hideout of the suspects. He added that the suspects are accused of “arrest, detention and unlawful confinement” under article 253 of Cambodia Criminal Code and “drug use and trafficking” under the Articles 40 and 45 of Cambodian Law on Drugs Control.
