1 Chinese man arrested trying to smuggle 1kg of ‘Ket’ from Cambodia to Thailand

A Chinese national was arrested on October 9, 2022 t night in possession of one kilogramme of Ketamine at Phnom Penh International Airport by police from the Anti-Drug Department of the Ministry of Interior and custom and excise officers based at the airport.

The sting operation was led by Phnom Penh court deputy prosecutor Heng Pheng.

Anti-Drug Police Department police officer Lieutenant Colonel Nuon Sothearith said yesterday that the suspect was identified as Li Cheng Ye, male, 38, a Chinese tourist from Beijing.

Lt Col Sothearith said that at about 6pm on Sunday, the suspect walked into the departure area after checking in for a flight to Thailand.

While the suspect was passing through airport security, the x-ray machine detected irregularities on the man’s music device.



“After inspecting his speaker, police discovered more than a kilogramme of drugs in the device,” Lt Col Sothearith said.

“After seizing the evidence, police immediately arrested him inside the airport,”   he said.

After questioning by police, the suspect confessed that he was hired by an unidentified Chinese man to smuggle the drugs from Cambodia to Thailand.

“Police are continuing to investigate the case to search for other suspects involved in the case and bring them to justice,” he said.

He added that for this case, the suspect is allegedly accused with “drug possession and transport” under the Article 40 of the Cambodian and faces the punishment at least 25 years in prison.
