Jealous husband shoots wife

A former military officer was detained and charged by the Stung Treng Provincial Court yesterday after shooting his wife and causing her grievous injuries in a fit of jealously for allegedly having an affair with another man in the province.

Siem Pang district police chief Colonel Chim Aun named the accused as Vai Chhom, 71, former military Lieutenant Colonel and his wife was identified as Pean Bovean, 44, a farmer.

Col Aun said that the accused was charged with “attempted murder and unauthorised possession of a weapon” and faces 10 to 15 years in prison if convicted.

He added that the accused was arrested on August 27 after he shot his wife in a jealous rage causing serious injuries to her left hip. 

According to the accused’s confession, on the evening of August 26 he noticed that his wife wasn’t at home, so he went in search of her.

At about 9:30 pm, he drove to his rice field on the outskirts of the village and saw his wife sitting and talking with a young man whom he suspected was her adulterer.

The accused said that when he saw his wife talking with the young man in a quiet place near his hut at night, he became furious with them. He pulled out his pistol, walked towards them and threatened to shoot the man.

His wife, however, intervened and she stood between her husband and the man attempting to snatch the gun from her husband.

“The gun was accidentally discharged and caused her grievous injuries while the young man fled the scene,” Col Aun said.

After the shooting incident, the accused rode his motorbike to the commune police station and confessed his crime to authorities.

He added that police rescued the victim and transferred her to the provincial referral hospital, where she is in a stable condition and will remain for further treatment.

Chan Tra: Life of a Cambodian Traditional Tattoo Artist

TV5 Selects Freshie Girls and Boys 2009

The “Freshie Girls and Boys” competition took place on March 30 at the TV5’s station in Phnom Penh and was organized by the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces’ Television Channel 5 (TV5). Bun Kert, Director of the “Freshie Girls and Boys Organizational Committee” of the TV5, said more than 1,000 Cambodian youth applied for the competition, but through many different phases of the competition, only 20 girls and boys who reached the final round on March 30.
