The Education Ministry today issued a directive setting out four measures to prevent improper activities on Valentine’s Day in public and private schools across the country.

According to the directive dated February 11, the ministry said it has observed that a small number of students misunderstand that February 14 is Valentine’s Day or a date for couples

“This day is not a tradition of our Cambodian people,” it said.

“A small number of young people have acted foolishly, forgotten their studies, lost their personal and family dignity and abandoned their culture and Khmer national traditions,” said the ministry.

The directive said that in order to strengthen educational institutions and to continue to prevent the spread of Covid-19, the ministry is introducing the following measures to prevent improper activities on Valentine’s Day, February 14.

-All stakeholders must disseminate information to students by all means so as not to misunderstand the meaning of Valentine’s Day

-All educational institutions and classrooms must strictly enforce discipline, especially on ethical management, by regularly monitoring student absences.

-School youth councils and children’s councils must implement “peer education” activities.

-Educators must liaise with parents, guardians and the community to provide and receive information related to improper activities committed by students to cooperate in preventing, educating and improving students in a timely manner.
