Cambodia Marked National Dengue Fever Campaign Day

In order to control the outbreak the Dengue fever and respond to people affected by Dengue fever, the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport (MoEYS) and Phnom Penh Municipality and other involved ministries and institutions have marked the National Dengue Fever Campaign Day to Control the Outbreak and Response on the 25th of May at the Bak Touk High School in Phnom Penh.
Dr. Mam Bunheng, Minister of Health, said that this event is very important because it will remind all Cambodians of the danger of Dengue fever and its outbreak in Cambodia.
He continued to say that the event is also aimed to raise awareness about the disease of for the people especially the students so that can join with the ministry, and to reduce and combat the outbreak of the disease in Cambodia in the future.
“I would like to appeal for all people, especially parents of children to join in and to combat the outbreak of Dengue fever by paying attention to cleaning houses,
According to a Ministry of Health’s report, in 2009 there were 11,699 people affected by Dengue fever and 38 people died of the disease. However, the number of the reported case by the fever reduced by half if compared with the previous year.
“I wish to appeal to the parents to bring their children to hospitals or health centers nearby in case they suspect Dengue fever affection so that they can get properly treated and avoid any danger,” he said. “I also call on all donor countries and development partners to continue their help to fight against the Dengue fever.”
Im Sethy, Minister of Education Youth and Sport, said at the National Dengue Fever Campaign Day that if the event was held at the start of the rainy season which will begin from May through to October during which newly born mosquito may deliver several diseases, including Dengue fever and Malaria, especially among children.
The Minister added that to the control, the rate of the fever have will highly increase between May and August which will have serious impacted on children’s health and lives and people’s moneys, he added.
To reduce and combat the outbreak of the Dengue fever, the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport have included the Dengue fever subject into schools’ curriculum, he said, adding that the Ministry also conducted Dengue fever training for teachers in Phnom Penh and provinces to teach their students to avoid the affection of the disease in the future.
The Minister added that the ministry and the schools have also organized many events in raising awareness for children, students and people at the schools every year in Cambodia.
“I would like to appeal for all teachers, parents and involved communities to continue their hard work, to join hands with involved institutions and to raise awareness about the fever for their children and students in Cambodia,” he said.
Dr. Ngan Chantha, Deputy Director of the National Malaria Center and Director of the National Dengue Fever Centre in Ministry of Health, said Dengue fever has become one of the most serious public health problems in Cambodia. He stated that the worst year on Dengue fever records was in 2007 in which over 40,000 children were affected by the fever and 407 children were killed by it in Cambodia.
Chantha added that in 1995, the mortality rate of the fever in Cambodia is 15 percent but due to his ministry and center’s hard work and activities, the death rate has dropped 0.68 percent in 2008 and 0.3 percent in 2009. /
