King Norodom Sihanomi’s Birthday Celebration

About 150 Buddhist monks, nuns and laypeople in Phnom Penh have gathered in order to celebrate the Birthday of His Majesty the King Preah Karuna Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, the King of the Kingdom of Cambodia, for his age of 58 years.

The Celebration of the King Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni’s Birthday was organized by Samdech Preah Sangareach Bou Kry, Leader of the Dhamayut Buddhist sect in Camnbodia, and the Rector of the Preah Sihamoniraja Buddhist University, and presided over by Samdech Kong Samol, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Royal Palace on 7th May at the Porpey Pagoda in Phnom Penh.

Samdech Preah Sangareach Bou Kry, Leader of the Dhamayut Buddhist Sect in Cambodia, said that every year Preah Sihamoniraja Buddhist University has always marked the celebration of the King Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni’s Birthday in order to bless and wish him to have a good health and long age so that he will be able to stay true for his beloved people for ever.

Samdech Preah Sangkareach Bou Kry continued to say that King Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni was the highest leader of all people in Cambodia and so far he has been working hard in helping his beloved people as well as developing his country.

He added that King Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni has also devoted his own life, his own time and properties for the benefits of the social development, the development of the human resources, Buddhism and Buddhist monks in the Kingdom of Cambodia.

Heak Sopheap, Vice-Rector of the Preah Sihamoniraja Buddhist University, said that King Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni is a good King. The King is the excellent Buddhist founder of the Buddhism in Cambodia.

Heak Sopheap stated that King Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni is the tenfold conduct of King within the noble nature and supreme moral law. The King has been working hard and sacrificing both his spirit and materials to promote and develop the Buddhism and Buddhist monks’ resources in Cambodia.

“With the highest respect and love and to express our gratitude to His Majesty the King, we celebrate this birthday ceremony for him for his age of 58 years old. We wish His Majesty the King with the best of heath, luck, longevity and intellectual in order that he will be staying with us and with his people for ever,” he said.

He added that to promote and develop the Buddhism and Buddhist monk resources in Cambodia, Preah Karuna Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom was established and funded the Preah Sihamoniraja Buddhist University in 2004 in Phnom Penh.

During the celebration of the King’s Birthday, the Deputy Prime Minister Kong Samol has offered the King Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni’s money, US$ 2,000, to the Samdech Preah Sangareach Bou Kry for the event organizing.

His Majesty the King Preah Karuna Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom was born on the 14th of May 1953. He was elected as King by the a nine-member throne council on the 14th of October 2004 after the abdication of his father His Majesty the King Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk. //

Sorn Elit, the Tallest Cambodian Taekwando Champion

He was speaking to The Southeast Asia Weekly on July 22. The Secretary General said that Sorn Elit, 22, is currently the best Taekwondo fighter in Cambodia. He has attended many competitions both at home and abroad and has achieved success in both fields. In 2008, he won the national heavyweight title in the Taekwondo championships. “I am very proud of Sorn Elit as he is the best fighter in Cambodia,” Samnang said. “I believe that he will continue to bring honor to the country, the sport and himself as he competes in still more competitions at home and in the international fighting arena. Chan Tra: Life of a Cambodian Traditional Tattoo Artist
