Nationwide Swimming Championship Tournament

Over 130 Cambodian swimmers from Phnom Penh and Kandal Province have attended the Nationwide Swimming Championship 2010 over five days from 23rd to 27th April 2010 at the National Stadium Complex in Phnom Penh in order to compete to become the swimming champions for 2010 in Cambodia.

The Nationwide Swimming Championship Tournament 2010 is organized by the Department of Education Youth and Sports in the Ministry of Education Youth and Sports (MoEYS) in collaboration with the Khmer Amateur Swimming Federation (KASF).

Hem Thon, Secretary General of the Khmer Amateur Swimming Federation and also the Executive Member of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), said that every year the KASF has organized the nationwide swimming competition in Phnom Penh aiming to select the best swimmers of the year.

The main purpose of the nationwide swimming competition is to promote and develop the swimming sport as well as to select the best swimmers for the future national and international swimming tournaments for inside and outside the country.

“I think that this nationwide competition is important because it will help to promote and develop the sport in Cambodia. I hope that through this competition we will able to select the best swimmers for attending both national and international swimming competitions in future,” he said during a telephone interview with The Southeast Asia Weekly on April 23.

Regarding the swimming competition, Hem Thon said that the competition has divided into two categories in which the under 15 year-old competition and over 15 year-year competition. He added that for those who will win first place of the competition will receive a gold medal, along with prizes; those who will win the second place of the competition receives a silver medal with other prizes, and the third winner receive a bronze medal with other prizes. The medals and prizes are provided by the Ministry of Education Youth and Sports.

Phin Rotha, 14, is a student of the Bak Touk High School. Rotha has been training with KASF for three years in Phnom Penh.

Rotha said that he was happy to attend the nationwide swimming championship competition this year. He added that last year he has also attended the nationwide swimming competition in Phnom Penh, and as result he won a silver medal, with prizes from MoEYS.

“I am happy and I am ready to participate in this year’s nationwide swimming competition in Phnom Penh. I hope that with well preparation and hard training, I will win another medal and prizes from this year’s competition,” he told The Southeast Asia Weekly during a personal interview on 23rd April.

He added to prepare for the national and international swimming competitions, he will continue to train hard and attend more swimming competitions in the future.

According to the KASF’s report, there are a total of 72 swimmers, 16 of which are female and 14 national representatives in Cambodia. //
