Cambodia to Organize the Universal Khmer Singing Festival 2010

The Royal Government of Cambodia has planned to organize the “Universal Khmer singing Festival 2010” from 13th to 23rd July 2010 at the Diamond Island Convention and Exhibition Centre in Phnom Penh in order to preserve the Khmer traditional and pop music in Cambodia.

The event will be organized by the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts in collaboration with the Office of the Council of Ministers, Ministry of Economy and Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ministry of Education Youth and Sport, Ministry of Tourism, the General Decorate of the Bayon Radio and Television, and supported by Canadian Bank Plc which is the main partner which has provided the financial support for the preparation and management of the festival process.

Khem Sarith, Secretary of State in Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, said that it marks the first time for the government which will organize the “Universal Khmer singing Festival 2010” in Cambodia in order to promote music in Cambodia. He said the purpose of the festival is to promote and preserve the Khmer traditional culture and pop music for next generation.

“We are very proud to organize the Universal Khmer singing Festival 2010. The main purpose of the event has intentioned to preserve and strengthen the national identity to create and encourage the competitiveness in the artistic sector of both Khmer traditional and pop music to enhance Khmer culture, tradition and customs as the Khmer saying goes ‘Cambodia, the Kingdom of Culture,” he said at a recent press conference.

He added that the Festival is also aimed to encourage and promote both traditional and pop music artists to strengthen the capacity and quality in their careers in order to complete with the other countries in the region and the rest of the world, especially to build up the tie of society and friendship between the Cambodian artists in Cambodia and abroad.

Relating to organization of the Universal singing Festival, Khem Sarith pointed out to implement an accordance with the establishment of the Commission of the Inter-Ministries for organizing the Universal Khmer singing Festival, the Royal Government of Cambodia has acknowledged and granted approval for the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts (MoCFA) to prepare and launch the Universal Khmer singing Festival in collaboration with Commission of the Inter-Ministries namely the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, the Office of the Council of Ministers, Ministry of Economy and Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ministry of Education Youth and Sports, Ministry of Tourism, the General Decorate of the Bayon Radio and Television, especially Canadian Bank, as the partner of who has provided the financial support for the preparation and management of the festival process.

Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Sok An, Minister of the Council of Ministers will be presiding over the opening ceremony of the Universal Khmer Songs Festival 2010 will be held on 13th July and closed on 23rd July 2010 at the Diamond Island Convention and Exhibition Centre with participation of the contestants of Cambodians living in the country and the Cambodian overseas residents, the Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen will be presiding over the closing ceremony, according to Khem Sarith.

Pich Tum Kravel, Technical Committee of the Universal Khmer Songs Festivals 2010, said that the Festival is opened for all Cambodian people both those who live inside and outside the country. He added that those who will win the first place (both Khmer traditional and pop music) of the competition will receive one trophy, along with 6 million riel (US$ 1,428) prize; the second place receives one trophy with 4 million riel (US$ 952) prize; third place receives a trophy with 3 million riel (US$ 714); the friendship award receives 1 million riel (US$ 238); and the complementary award is 500,000 riel (US$ 120) (only apply o the contestant involves in the final round). ///
