One of The University of Cambodia’s “Samdech Hun Sen-Handa National Scholarships 2008” students, Soun Virak, 19, spoke with The Southeast Asia Weekly about his desire for the future after graduation. Soun Virak is the oldest brother with two sisters in the family and they are now living in Kampong Chhnang province, where he was born in 1991.

His father is a colonel military commander working with the Artillery Unit in the Ministry of National Defense based in Kampong Chhnang province and his mother is a business woman living in Prey Khmer Village, Rolea Phoear district, Kampong Chhnang province.

Soun Virak is now studying Economics at The University of Cambodia (UC) after he passed the UC scholarship exams in 2008 in Phnom Penh. Virak studied at the Bun Rany Hun Sen Rolea Phoear High School in Kampong Chhnang province and he earned a Baccalaureate in 2008.

“I wish to thank Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen and Dr. Handa very much for offering me the scholarship to study with The University of Cambodia without paying,” he said. “To show my gratitude to them, I will try to study hard to get a Bachelor’s Degree in the future.”

Virak continued to say that he decided to study Economics at The University of Cambodia because he wanted to apply for a good job in finance and banking in the future. On the other hand, he revealed his desire to become a future businessman.

“I decided to study Economics with UC because I wanted to become a future businessman,” he said. “If I become a businessman or business manager I will be able to make money to support my family as well as contribute to the progress and development of Cambodia.”

Virak said that besides his studies with UC, he is also in the second year of studying Law at the Royal University of Law and Economic Sciences in Phnom Penh. He added that he decided to study law because he wishes to know about national and international laws in addition to his Economics major so that he can run his business well in the future.

To achieve his Bachelor Degree’s goal, Virak now studies very hard and reads many books related to his studies everyday.

“I will continue to apply for studies for a Master’s Degree in Economics with The University of Cambodia to support my family after completing my Bachelor’s Degree goal in the future.”

Sok Chivoan, a former classmate of Soun Virak, said that Virak is one of his good friends. Chivoan said that he has known Virak since he was a child and they were studying together at the Bun Rany Hun Sen Rolea Phoear High School in Kampong Chhnang province.

Chivoan continued to say that Virak was a hard learner, helpful and friendly and was also one of the most outstanding students in his class.

“I am happy having a friend like Soun Virak. I hope that with his hard study and hard work Virak will pass his studies at The University of Cambodia and RULE in the future,” he said during a personal interview with The Southeast Asia Weekly. ////
