Cambodia Hosts 4th Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s Football Cup 2010

A total of 34 Cambodian football teams, including ten Cambodian premier leagues, four football clubs from companies and non-governmental organizations in Phnom Penh, and 20 other clubs from cities and provinces have attended the “4th Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s Football Cup 2010,” aiming to encourage playing football in Cambodia.

The “4th Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s Football Cup 2010” competition began on January 7 and will end on March 6, 2010. The competition will take place in four provinces including Battambang, Siem Reap, Kep, and Svay Rieng.

Ouk Sethy Cheat, Director of the National Sport Training Center in the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport (MoEYS) and General Secretary of the Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC), said that the Football Cup 2010 was organized by the FFC and funded by KTC Company, KTH Company, Hello 015, 016 company, and SCA, and also supported by Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minster Sok An, Honorary President of FFC and Phnom Penh Governor Kep Chuktema.

“It marks the fourth year FFC has organized ‘Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s Football Cup 2010’,” Ouk Sethy Cheat said during a press conference at the National Olympic Stadium on January 4.

The main objective of the football competition is to attract Cambodian youths to pay attention to football playing to have good health and become a strong pillar and human resource for the development in Cambodia, he said, adding that it is also to select the best Cambodian football team to prepare and play at international football competitions, which will take place inside or outside the country in the future.

The Director added that another objective of the competition is to celebrate the 31st Anniversary of the 7th January Victory Day, which is the second birth of all Cambodians.

The competition was divided into eight poles and two sections in which the first section was for “Dropping Competition.” The “Dropping Competition” will run from January 7-15 in four provinces such as Battambang, Siem Reap, Kep, and Svay Rieng. The second section is for “Final Competition.” It will take place from January 30 to March 6, 2010 at the National Stadium in Phnom Penh.

Sethey Cheat said the “Final Football Competition” will be organized every Saturday and Sunday at the National Stadium in Phnom Penh and broadcast live by the Television Kampuchea or TVK. He added that those who win the first class will receive a trophy, along with 80 million riel (US$19,230), those who win the second place will receive 40 million riel (US$9,615), and those who win the third place will receive 20 million riel (US$4,800).

“I hope that through these competitions, Cambodian football will develop and our football players will also gain more playing experience and will be able to win medals from international competitions in the future,” he said. “I also hope that these events will attract our Cambodian people, especially youths to play football as well as to promote their health and help develop their country in the future.” ////
