One of the University of Cambodia’s “Samdech Hun Sen-Handa National Scholarships 2008” students, Heng Oddam, 20, was born in Sourng district, in Kampong Cham province. He has one brother and one sister and he is the second brother in his family. His father is a Police Officer and his mother is housewife living in Kampong Cham province.

Heng Oddam is now studying English Literature at the University of Cambodia (UC) after he passed the UC’s scholarship exams in 2008. Before applying for studying with The University of Cambodia, Heng Oddam studied at Tbong Khmom High School in Kampong Cham Province, and earning his Baccalaureate in 2008. He applied to study the English Literature at UC following the introduction of the Samdech Techo Hun Sen “Vision 100”scholarship and “Samdech Hun Sen-Handa National Scholarships” in 2008.

“When I passed the UC’s scholarship exams I feel very excited because I never have this opportunity before. I think that I am lucky that I passed the scholarship of the University of Cambodia in 2008 without paying the tuition,” he told The Southeast Asia Weekly during an interview on December 16.

Heng Oddam said that he decided to apply for the scholarship to study the English Literature at The University of Cambodia because he did not want to spend his parent’s money for his study in Phnom Penh. On the other hand, he knew that UC is the best university which its educational program is very most up-to-date curriculum modeled on the modular system in the United State of America.

He added that he decided to apply for study with UC because he wanted to become an English Teacher or an English Interpreter in Cambodia in the future.

“I am interesting in English Literature since I was studying at the Tbong Khmom High School in Kampong Cham province. I decided to study English Literature because I wanted to speak English well and either become a professional English Teacher in Cambodia in future,” he said.

He added that since he has been studying English with UC so far, his English ability including writing, reading and speaking skills, has improved and he could also communicate English well with his friends as well as foreigners in Cambodia.

He emphasized that to reach his Bachelor’s degree goal, he will try to study hard, doing exercises or homework and also read books related to his studies. He also takes advantage sources like the internet, foreign newspapers and magazines to perform additional research in his area of study.

He added that he also planed to study for Master’s degree in English Literature with the University of Cambodia in future.

Taing Ratha, 20, the second year engineering student of the Institute of Technology of Cambodia, and a close friend of Heng Oddam, praised about Heng Oddam’s hard work.

Ratha said that he has known Heng Oddam since he was studying with him at grade 10 in Tbong Khmom High School in Kampong Cham province.

He added that Oddam was a hard learner and he was also one of the top tens students in his class.

“I hope that with his hard studies and hard works, he will pass his Bachelor degree with UC and he will realize his dreams and become a future good English teacher in Cambodia,” he said. ////
