“I am Now Studying Hard to Continue for a Doctoral Degree With UC”

Koeurn Phalla, 24, one of The University of Cambodia’s “Samdech Hun Sen-Handa National Scholarships 2008” students, has provided an interview to The Southeast Asia Weekly on October 20 about his experience at the UC. Phalla was born in 1985 in Pursat Province and he has one sister and three brothers. He is the fourth son in his family. His father is a motodop driver and his mother is housewife living in Kean Svay district, Kandal province.

Phalla is studying Economics at The University of Cambodia (UC) and is also attending the Finance and Accounting major at the Institute of Educational Commerce in Phnom Penh. He passed the scholarship exams offered by the UC in 2008. Before he passed the UC exams, he studied at Kean Svay High School in Kandal province and earned a Baccalaureate in 2008.

“I am so happy that I passed the scholarship exam of the UC. I am sure that I would not be able to study at UC were it not for the scholarship. My parents wouldn’t be able to carry the financial burden,” he said.

Phalla decided to study Economics with UC as he knew that The University of Cambodia is one of the best universities in Cambodia and it can help him to become to be a future leader and economist. So he can work to promote the development and economic growth in Cambodia.

“I applied for a study with the University of Cambodia because I know that UC is one of the best universities in Cambodia. I decided to study Economics because I was very interested in this major and wanted to become an economic expert or finance and accounting specialist in Cambodia in future,” he said.

Phalla said that since he has been studying with UC so far, he learned a lot of skills. Especially his Computer Skills, English Literature, Laws, Philosophy he found very enjoyable. He could also read, write and speak English well.

“To achieve my Bachelor Degree goal, I am now studying very hard and I have to read many books related to my studies. I also researched other sources such as internet, foreign newspapers and magazines,” he said.

When Phalla completes his Bachelor’s Degree, he will then continue to study for a Master’s and Doctoral Degrees with The University of Cambodia in the future. He then decided to study the Finance and Account with the Institute of Educational Commerce because it is the major that related to his major at UC, and will certainly improve his chances on the job market.

Chan Reaksmey, 22, first- year international relation student of the University of Cambodia, and also personal friend to Koeurm Phalla, said that Phalla is an active and hard leaner. He said that he has known Koeurn Phalla since he started studying the English Literature with him in 2008.

Reaksmey continued to say that Phalla is a friendly, helpful, thoughtful, patient and honest student. He likes to help and support people, especially his colleagues and vulnerable people. He added that Phalla was one of the most outstanding students in his class at the UC.

“I am happy as I have a good friend like Phalla. So I hope with his hard study and hard works, he will successfully pass his Bachelor Degree in Economics with UC. I also hope that he will realize his dreams and become a future leader,” she told The Southeast Asia Weekly.
