The Ministry of Interior have terminated the positions of
123 police officers with the Cambodia Counter Counterfeit Committee (CCCC) and
transferred some of them to work with the Ministry and others to the General
Commissariat of the National Police.
Touch Sokhak, Vice-Spokesman at the Ministry of Interior,
told Khmer Times on Sunday that these
police officers including Lieutenant
General Tan Sokvichea, the CCCC’s Chief of Secretariat, was transferred to work
as an ‘Advisor’ with the Ministry while Lieutenant General Kem Cheat, who is
the CCCC’s Vice-President, was suspended pending a complaint by the
representative of the Chhivtimex Group alleging that he had taken $100,000 and
48 bottles of red wines from the company in exchange for permission to re-open
the company after it failed an inspection in 2021.
He went on to say that Lt Gen Cheat was summoned and
questioned on Thursday by the police in Penal Department at the Ministry over
the allegations.
“During police interrogation, Lt Gen Cheat denied the allegations by the representative of the company and claimed that he did not commit any thing as accused,” he said.
“The police completed the questioning but he was not
arrested,” he added.
The family of Lt Gen Cheat said yesterday, after he returned
from the questioning on Thursday he became sick and lost consciousness.
However, he has recovered after receiving medical care.
The other officers were re-allocated to police departments
at the General Commissariat, where they had served before they were transferred
to the CCCC in 2014, Sokhak said.
“Their positions at the CCCC were terminated after an
investigation was conducted into ‘complaints’ and ‘irregularitie s’ and it was
found that they had all made mistakes in performing their duties in the past,”
Sokhak told Khmer Times on Sunday.
“So the Minister decided to transfer them to work to other
police departments where they had worked previously,” he said.
“Regarding General Meach Sophanna, who is the President of
the CCCC and also the Secretary of State at the Ministry, the Ministry are
investigating his case and once concluded, they will decide whether they will
terminate his position or not,” he added.
Related to the CCCC’s irregularities, Sokhack said that the
CCCC is not dissolve but the Ministry has just merely changed its roles and
duties from inspecting and cracking down on counterfeit products to only the
dissemination, education or raising awareness on counterfeit products.
