Bar Association advocates professional ethics

The Bar Association of the Kingdom of Cambodia (BAKC) has announced that it strongly supports the new campaign to expedite the swift resolution of court cases launched recently by the Ministry of Justice.

The Ministry campaign promotes four goals: “Justice, Speed, Accuracy and Legality”.

BAKC president Ly Chantola issued instructions to legal professionals on correct participation in the campaign.

He said that the BAKC urges all lawyers and law interns who are assigned to defend or are hired to represent their clients in court to practice professional ethics and to heed all regulations, both in the “Law on the Statute of Lawyers”, as well as in the BAKC “Code of Conduct for Lawyers”.

Also, the BAKC is encouraging all lawyers and law interns to strive to ensure that the conduct of trials is fair and reflects respect for the laws and also follows the precisely correct procedures which are set out in Article 38 on “just trials and correct procedures” in the Code.

Ly Chantola stated, “Any request by lawyers and interned lawyers for postponement of a trial, or to defer any legal procedures, must include appropriate reasons. No request may be made merely for the sake of causing a delay in court procedures, or arising from negligence, or for any other unreasonable issues that may detract from sound judicial processes.”

“During the implementation of this campaign, the BAKC will continue to follow up, receive information and make new instructions or recommendations to strengthen the implementation of the Code of Conduct for Lawyers in regard to fairness and expediency on the part of lawyers and interning lawyers,” his instructions read.

“If in the case that any lawyer or interning lawyer is found to have violated the above principles and to obstruct the cause and the interests of justice, then the BAKC will take more serious action and discipline,” he added.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Koeut Rith on Wednesday last week urged all related stakeholders to perform in the spirit of high responsibility to fulfill the Ministry campaigns to enhance the quality and efficiency of the judiciary in Cambodia, which is an aim that reflects the desire of His Majesty the King, the prime minister and all Cambodian people.

Sorn Elit, the Tallest Cambodian Taekwando Champion

He was speaking to The Southeast Asia Weekly on July 22. The Secretary General said that Sorn Elit, 22, is currently the best Taekwondo fighter in Cambodia. He has attended many competitions both at home and abroad and has achieved success in both fields. Chan Tra: Life of a Cambodian Traditional Tattoo Artist
