Former president of Khmer Rise Party William Guang confessed before the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on May 26, 2022 that he masterminded the armed robbery at the residence of young tycoon Ean Sieu Mey.

Yesterday, the Phnom Penh Municipal Court began the trial in the case in which William Guang and six other people were accused of breaking in Mey’s residence at Villa V01 in Kork Chambok village, Choam Chao III in Por Senchey district on the night of December 19, 2021.

The court’s Presiding Judge Chhun Davy stated that the accused were identified as Sok Sovann Vathana Sabung alias William Guang, male, 44, his wife Sovann Srey Soryopor, 24; Or Ramorn, 33, Guang’s driver; Sovann Ranuth, 26; Guang’s personal assistant; Keth March, 26, a KRP accountant; and his girlfriend Thun Wathanak Boramey, 27, a car vendor and moneylender for Guang.

Judge Davy added that Guang was charged with three counts of ‘theft under aggravating circumstances, unauthorised possession of weapons, and forging public documents’ while the other six accused were charged with “accomplice of theft with aggravating circumstances, unauthorised possession of a weapon, and forging public documents” under Articles 29, 353, 357, 490, and 629 of the Criminal Code.

She said that the accused were arrested jointly by Military Police and other police forces day after the robbery. She added that after the arrests, military police seized two cars, five guns, bullets, and a large amount of stolen jewellery from them.

If convicted, each of the accused will face jail term of five to ten years.

The court completed its questioning of Guang yesterday. His accomplices will stand trial soon. Guang confessed to committing robbery, illegal use of weapons and preparing a master plan to carry out the robbery but denied forgery. During his confession, he said that others carried out the act while he stayed in his car.

While giving the reason for his burglary, he told the court he hated the business woman for flaunting her wealth (gold, silver and dollars) posting about them on social media while many needy people were around. “But I did not rob her money. I only took her jewellery,” he told the court during the trial.

The hearing will continue on June 9.
