Ex-estate chief sentenced to two years in prison for embezzling more than $ 240,000

Phnom Penh Municipal Court on February 14, 2022 sentenced a businessman to two years in prison for issuance of dud cheques worth more than $ 240, 000 committed between March and July 2019. 

Court’s Presiding Judge Seng Leang identified the accused as Chhy Yary, 47, the Head of the International Forex Trading company living in Battambang Province’s Bavel district. 

“The Phnom Penh Municipal Court has decided to sentence the accused Chhy Yary to two years in prison,” judge Leang read the verdict. 

“The court ordered him to pay $ 242, 385 for damages to the victim as plaintiff in case,” he said.

He emphasized that Chhy Yary was charged with “issuance of dud cheques “under Article 231 of the Law on Negotiable Instruments and Payment Transactions.

He said that Chhy Yary was arrested on July 27, 2019  in Preah Sihanouk province by provincial authorities and the National Police after Phnom Penh Municipal Court issued an arrest warrant.

He added that Chhy Yary was sued by Chea Sopha, 45, one of his clients.
