A former CNRP’s commune chief was released from prison on February 16, 2022 after he has served his five-year jail term for inciting porters to protest in front of the Poipet Customs Department building in Banteay Meanchey province in 2015.

Tboung Khmum provincial prison guard Major Kim Sopheak yesterday identified him as Chao Veasna, 58, the former second deputy chief of Poipet commune.

Maj Sopheak said that Veasna was sentenced by Banteay Meanchey  Provincial Court in 2017 to five years in prison over three counts on “incitement to commit felony; the accomplice of intentionally causing damages and destruction of public property with aggravating circumstances” under Articles 494, 496, 410 and 411 of the Criminal Code.

He said that Veansa was arrested on February 16, 2016. He was arrested in accordance with a Banteay Meanchey Provincial Court warrant.

He added that Veansao was arrested after he had incited a crowd of angry protesters to go against the provincial authorities in 2015.

The protest resulted in violence between the porters and police and caused damage to seven vehicles belonging to Poipet Customs and Excise Department and other public property.

“He was released from Tboung Khmum Provincial Prison on February 16, 2022 after he had served the term of his five-year-imprisonment,” Maj Sopheak told Khmer Times.

“His wife and the whole family came to directly receive him from the prison and brought him to their home in Banteay Meanchey province,” he added.
