Scholarship Student Son Samnang Dreams to be an English Teacher

Son Samnang, 20, one of The University of Cambodia’s “Samdech Hun Sen-Handa National Scholarships 2008” students. Samnang is the first son among five brothers who are now living in Kampong Speu province where he was born in 1990. He is now studying English Literature at The University of Cambodia (UC), and he is also studying Banking and Finance at the Royal University of Law and Economics Science in Phnom Penh.

Samnang had earned a Baccalaureate when he studied at the Kampong Speu High School in 2008 before being passing the scholarship exams offered by The University of Cambodia.

“I decided to apply for scholarship to study English Literature at UC because I know that this university is one of the best universities in Cambodia. I decided to study English Literature major because I wanted to be a good English speaker and also a future English teacher in Cambodia,” he said during an interview with The Southeast Asia Weekly on March 16th.

To achieve his goal, Samnang studies very hard and reads many books related to he studies every day. He has also conducted his own research about English literature and also learning, internet skills, and he will try to study harder to get a Bachelor’s Degree. He will then continue to study for Master’s Degree with UC in the future.

Son Samnang said that besides studies with UC, he now is also studying Banking and Finance at the Royal University of Law and Economics Science in Phnom Penh. He added that he decided to study Banking and Finance with RULE because he also whishes to work as a Banker or Business operator with international private companies in Cambodia in the future.

He emphasized that he is now looking for internships or part-time work with a national and international Non-Governmental Organizations in Cambodia. He added that the reason why he wanted to work while studying is because he wanted to learn about working and other office skills and gain useful experience prior to graduation. On the other hand, he wanted to make money to support his studies.

Nget Sina, 20, UC student and a personal friend with Son Samnang, said that Samang is a good student and also a hard learner at class. He added that Son Samnang was a patient, gentle and helpful student. He is one of the most outstanding students in The University of Cambodia. ///
