Seng Chantho Studies Law with UC to Become a Lawyer

Seng Chantho, 22, one of The University of Cambodia’s “Samdech Hun Sen-Handa National Scholarships 2007” students. She was born in 1989 in Kratie province and she has two brothers and one sister. She is the youngest sister in her in family. Her parents are the business people and living Kratie province.

Chantho now is studying Law at The University of Cambodia (UC) and also studying the English Literature at the Norton University (NU) in Phnom Penh. She passed the scholarship exams offered by The University of Cambodia in Phnom Penh in 2007. Before studying with UC, she studied at Preah Kossamak High School in Kratie and earned a Baccalaureate in 2007.

“I think that I was lucky to pass the scholarship exams from The University of Cambodia in 2007. I am great full to Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Dr. Handa and Dr. Kao Kim Hourn very much for offering me the chance to study free of charge with UC in Phnom Penh,” she said during an interview with The Southeast Asia Weekly.

She studied Law with UC in 2007 so far, she has been learning a lot about the subject, she could understand about the basic knowledge of laws including Constitutions, civil laws, national and international laws, the penal code and criminal law and other legislations which have been implementing in Cambodia. She was also able to read, write and speak English fluently.

“I prefer to study this major with The University of Cambodia because I wish to be a future lawyer or law professor working in Cambodia. I want to work to help the poor and to contribute to the strengthening and the promotion of rule of law and law enforcement in Cambodia,” she said. “I am now happy as my Law skills have been improved after my study with UC. I hope that my skills will be more improved increasingly after the completion of my graduation with UC in the future,” she added.

Chantho continued to say that when she completes her graduation with UC, she will then apply for the study of the Master’s degree in Law with The University of Cambodia in the future. She pointed out that besides studying with The University of Cambodia; she now is also studying English Literature at the Norton University in Phnom Penh.

She added that she decided to study the English Literature with the Norton University because she wanted to write, read and speak well, in addition to her law skills in order that she can communicate with foreign people as well as to get good job in Cambodia in the future.

Chantho stated that besides her studies with UC and NU, she is now working as internship with the Extraordinary Chamber in the Court of Cambodia (ECCC) in Phnom Penh. She said that the reason why she decided to work while studying because she wanted to learn about working and other office skills and gain useful experience prior to her graduation. On the other hand, she wanted to earn money to support her studies in Phnom Penh. ///
